At the time of its founding in
1727, Goochland was a frontier area and offered a natural setting for large
plantations and country estates. Goochland
County today has the same appeal
with its lush rural landscape of rolling hills in the beautiful James River Valley.
Goochland's population of 18,000 residents has a county government whose
careful planning has allowed a high level of development while maintaining
its country charm that sets is apart from neighboring counties. There are
multi-million dollar estates as well as subdivision and other properties for
starter homes. Its public school student/teacher ratio is uncommonly low, and
many private schools are a short drive away. The J. Sargeant
Reynolds Community College western campus, located on a 100-acre tract in
Goochland's Courthouse area, offers highly specialized programs in
agricultural and mechanical academics as well as liberal arts, business
administration, and management degree programs.
The Goochland Recreation Department offers a variety of health, fitness, and
sports activities for its citizens of all ages, and many sports camps are
specially designed for youth. The county has four public and two private golf
facilities; it is home to the largest attended polo match in the country, The
Commonwealth Cup; and Goochland's Deep Run Hunt Club, Inc. is a premier fox
hunting club with Virginia
traditions and activities many decades old.
Just over 100 miles south of Washington, D.C., 28 miles east of Charlottesville,
and 6 miles west of Richmond,
Goochland is part of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. While the
western end of the county is predominately open farm and forestlands, the
eastern end consists of valuable stone deposits from which beautiful granite
is being mined today. Also in the eastern part of the county is beautiful
West Creek, a 3500-acre business park.
The tradition of managed growth continues as major high-quality companies
discover Goochland to be well located with its expedient access to major
highways and convenience to rail and air systems. And families are quick to
call Goochland home for its rural charm and excellent quality of life, free
of the hustle of city and suburban traffic but convenient to everything the
metropolitan area has to offer. There really is something for everyone in Goochland County.
